  • When rating this book with four stars, I am rating it as a historical monograph that is thorough and intelligently written being entertaining was not and indeed should not have been one of his main concerns in writing this book Still, it was slow going at times Having said that, I learned a great deal about the Declaration of Independence by reading this book, in particular the history of the philosophy behind it Superficial treatments of early American history often play up the breadth and dept [...]

  • The importance of this book is that is serves as a reminder of the deep philosophical antecedents that, combined with the historical events, prompted and molded what became the Declaration of Independence It is easy enough to think of the Revolution as a series of events with the Declaration of Independence an inevitable byproduct of the political and military events When deconstructed, the Declaration is an important synthesis of a philosophy based on natural law as well as the weight of Englis [...]

  • This is a work that is looked at as a major analysis of the Declaration of Independence from early in the 20th century First published in 1922, Carl Becker s book has been recognized as a valuable look at this founding document. The analysis is somewhat dated, but still serves a useful purpose The book covers the words of the Declaration, historical antecedents of the document, the story of the drafting of it, the literary qualities of Jefferson s contribution as amended by the committee designat [...]

  • This 1922 classic is still the must read on the Declaration Harry Jaffa in his book A New Birth of Freedom dogs Becker for being a historicist To ask whether the natural right philosophy of the Declaration is true or false is essentially a meaningless question 277 Jaffa believes that the Declaration is gospel with the Gettysburg Address. But this book does a great job of explaining the evolution of the argument of the Declaration His analysis of the Declaration is OK And his analysis of the 19th [...]

  • Interesting and beautifully written, the book is essentially a long close reading of The Declaration, with a gloss of the background philosophies that shaped it For better and worse, the book is very much of its time in terms of scholarship, but is still useful for those who want a quick dip in the waters.

  • As the back cover says, This is a book that every American should read Althoughwritten almost 100 years ago, I doubt that it will ever be surpassed as a beautifully writtenand though out exposition of the philosophy of the United States equality, life, libertyand happiness 5 stars

  • This famous document is examined as a window to the social philosophy of the time and as the beginning of U.S literature.

  • This book analyzes the Declaration of Independence line by line, word by word, for its antecedents, edits, and meaning So I was a political science major, books like this found my way.
