  • This could accurately be titled, A Very Short Introduction to the Exploration and Governance of the Antarctic Region, though one can see why the publishers didn t call it that As a survey of the history of international law and diplomacy surrounding control of the Antarctic, and of the claims made by various states to rights there, the book is excellent It has much less to say about the science actually being done in the region, and almost nothing about the way depictions of the region have sha [...]

  • The Antarctic is perhaps the strangest and most fascinating place on Earth The last continent to be discovered and explored, it is still politically a unique and peculiar geographic entity Its extremely harsh climate makes it uniquely inhospitable and unwelcoming place for humans to visit And yet, like many such remote and mysterious places it has been drawing explorers, adventurers and visitors for as long as it has been known This is a very well written and pretty detailed book about the Antar [...]

  • For the uninitiated this books provides a thorough history of the geopolitical history of the Antarctic In order to set the stage for the Antarctic Treaty System and its later doctrines the history of exploration and fauna exploitation are covered but are not the primary focus Learning about the language behind the treaties and emphasis on scientific endeavors are interesting in light of the ongoing unresolved claims on Antarctica should countries wish to start exploiting it While I would have l [...]

  • The Antarctic is something of a distant fascination for me distant in terms of physical space and shape, and also in its politics and metaphors Dodds moves, and closes, on these stretches by way of explorative history, excursions into flora and fauna, and a careful and wide ranging examination of the region s geopolitics And I think it s in the author s careful blending of the polar region s historical background, with its pictures of broad frontiers of discovery and man s intimate exploratory e [...]

  • A very poor book with poor coverage, mostly about politics and history and a long collection of names of treaties and organizations I would definitely not have finished it if it were much longer than it is.

  • I had the same problem with this book that I did with Global Warming A Very Short Introduction masses of data without the kind of integration that it would take to make them meaningful to me I kept wondering things like yes, but what percentage of the total might that be and wait, where s this in relationship to that It d be handy as a reference to get some specific data, maybe, but it wasn t informative.
