  • KathleenJones

I was brought up on a remote hill farm in the English Lake District I started writing as a teenager, publishing small pieces in local magazines and newspapers, fanzines and teenage mags such as Jackie I married very early and started travelling the world with my husband, had four children, worked in broadcasting in the middle east, and became a single parent Back in the UK I went to university as a mature student, and wrote my first book which I was lucky enough to have published by Bloomsbury Since then I ve managed to almost make a living as a writer, teaching creative writing pt time to pay the bills I ve probably made it sound easy, but it wasn t I know I ve been incredibly lucky to be published and to be able to share what I love doing most with other people Now I live with a sculptor who is working in Italy and so I spend as much time there as I can It s a bit of a scramble sometimes a crazy life but I wouldn t have it any other way.

  • Tamar Fell s a bastard Tamar Fell s a bastard Bertie McAffery was jumping up and down on the pavement in front of her, ginger hair flopping over his forehead, mouth pulled wide, screwed into a goggle eyed gurning face as he taunted herThe opening sentences of The Sun s Companion are indicative of what is to come Kathleen Jones tells her story with unflinching honesty, never shying away from the occasional cruelty of both life and people but her beautiful use of language, vivid narrative, and com [...]

  • Both my parents served in WWII and I grew up on stories of hardship and tragedy, tempered by the great British sense of humour, so I wasn t expecting Kathleen Jones novel to be a revelation, but it was THE SUN S COMPANION is a historical novel but there s such a sense of immediacy, the characters experiences are so vividly drawn, that as I read, I had that sense of being there , of actually experiencing the lives of the two engaging young heroines, one British, the other half German.A wealth of [...]

  • Kathleen Jones has written an excellent novel that could be the real thing The heroines appear real and people I d like to know Ms Jones makes me feel like I m a fly on the wall watching and feeling with these characters all they endure during World War II torn Europe It would appear that Ms Jones was right in the room documenting all the events and problems that appear in the book The friendship between Anna Weissmann and Tamar Fell would be improbable in most situations, but their friendship i [...]

  • This is not at all my usual reading material, so I m not entirely sure how to describe this novel other than to say I loved it Not literary fiction, not genre fiction it s almost the novelisation of a book of modern history, with characters I came to care about and scenes that were vivid and real It s the story of Tamar and Anna, teenagers from very different backgrounds, set against the backdrop of war.Tamar has spent her life on the move from town to town, dragged around by her flighty mother [...]

  • This is my kind of book clear, understated, chronological, full of little details that bring the immediate pre World War 2 era to life Anna s and Tamar s lives are given alternate attention so that the gradual unfolding of the story retains my interest Although they enter the book as barely teenagers and are shown as relatively powerless in their society families due to youth and being girls, neither of them is a cypher and they each have distinct characters and ambitions In many ways this novel [...]

  • I loved this book for so many reasons and not least because I am familiar with its setting the northeast of England and Cumbria I m also a fan of novels set in the period before and during World War II The only reason that I didn t award it five stars is that the accolade of a full five is reserved for the literary mighty ones I would deem the book a high quality light read I was interested to read it as I follow the author, Kathleen Jones s excellent blog A Writer s Life The Sun s Companion is [...]

  • A Stunning Wartime epic, romantic and heartbreaking. An incredibly realistic tale of friendship between half German Anna and rootless English Tamar The Second World War begins and the girls find themselves thrown together as young teenagers with traumatic pasts, in Northern England Over the following years they survive seperatly, each with their own ghosts and their longing to be successful, Anna as an artist and Tamar with her love of books They both fall in love with local lads but learn that w [...]

  • I found this a really entertaining read The young lives of the two girls and the build up to the start of the war was quite tense Then when war broke out you could you could really feel and understand a little of how it must have been I particularly liked the references to the land army as my Mother was in the land army and it made me wish I had talked to her about it when she was alive.

  • The Sun s Companion by Kathleen Jones is the story of a friendship during turbulent political times In short alternating segments, we are introduced to Anna and Tamar, who have different yet very similarly negative experiences of growing up in Europe in the 1930s both are outsiders and misfits in their own ways.Anna Weissman is a half Jew in the brewing storm of 1930s Germany and eventually comes to England where she has relatives however, not everything is easy for her here either Tamar is an o [...]

  • Kathleen Jones really understands the art of story and how it works Her effortless seeming prose had me completely engaged Tamar Fell is a schoolgirl who s moved home too many times In her new school she meets Anna, who s moved as well Anna is a German Jew The Second World War hasn t yet broken out, but Anna has experienced terrible things. This early part of the book I found completely gripping Unfortunately I found myself caring about the girls as children than I sometimes cared about them lat [...]

  • I ve just finished reading The Sun s Companion not sure why the book has this title and enjoyed it The research is impeccable and the two main characters, Anna and Tamar are well drawn The book would have been a 5 with less narrative and dialogue.I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to know about the land army and fell farming in WW2.
