• Born in Ramsgate, in 1865, British novelist and children s author Janet Syrett was the daughter of silk merchant Ernest Syrett She was educated at home, by a governess, then at the North London Collegiate, from 1877 to 1880, and at Cambridge Training College She was employed as a teacher at Swansea High School and at the Polytechnic School for Girls, London In addition to her fiction for both children and adults, Syrett was a playwright She died in 1943.
