This is a seriously weird magic realist novel But then if you set a book in Nazareth in 1948, and the main character is a heavily pregnant woman who keeps seeing another woman, dressed in blue giving her a baby, in her dreams, you are obviously and deliberately making a link with the most famous family ever to live in the town If you add to that mix a nun, who lives in Beirut, approaching saintliness, a wandering monk searching for the cave of Elijah and a husband with a penchant for quoting Ara [...]

Khoury s novels fascinate me partially because I know I cannot fully understand them As Though She Were Sleeping is ostensibly one woman s dream fantasy waking reality of the late 1940s in Beirut, Nazareth, and Jaffa It s the story of the British Israeli takeover of Jaffa and of Lebanese independence it s also the story of Mary, Joseph, Jesus, Abraham and Isaac and the ways in which Christian mythology overlaps with her life and that of her family It s brilliant and beautiful but terribly diffic [...]

Easily one of the best books i have read in years I can t recommend this enough The shifts between dream and reality, so that one informs the other, and the way that the language becomes consciousness for the main character is astounding I am baffled as to how this was done with such grace in translation Marilyn Booth deserves a world of praise for her translation work on this novel The only other book i have read that deals with these shifts so seamlessly is An Actress In The House by Joseph Mc [...]

ugh thank god i finished this book it was so annoying it talks about nothing keeps going back and forth between stories without adding anything up and at some parts i couldn t tell if they were the manifested dream or the actual story I m only giving two stars not one because at least i enjoyed some of the religious stories.
