  • 5 magnificent, mystical, miraculous stars I do not know how to review this book in a way to convey to you, the reader, how important, beautiful and synchronous I found this novel The book seeped deeply down into my psyche down into my soul and both replenished and challenged me to find my way back onto my spiritual path For the past year, I had grown complacent, lazy and over indulged in the senses, the material world and let go of my spiritual practices of meditation, prayer and small acts of s [...]

  • In 2006, I read Elias Khoury s The Gate of the Sun and was spirited away to the other side of the Palestinian Israeli conflict Of all the books I read that year, it stood out as a beacon to understanding the Other and worked on me like a journey through another culture. As Though She Were Sleeping is a journey of an entirely different order Milia has just been married to Mansour when the story opens She and her new husband are traveling by car from her Lebanese home town toward their honeymoon ho [...]

  • While she was sleepingSherif AzerDaily News Egypt 12 06 2008 For in that sleep of death what dreams may come William ShakespeareIn his latest novel, Ka anaha Nae ma As If She Were Sleeping , prominent Lebanese novelist, playwright and critic Elias Khoury takes his readers to a mystifying zone located between dreams and death. The novel is like a dream in itself a flow of breathtaking images springing from the subconscious of Millia, the main character of this profound, moving and majestic story, [...]

  • I m currently reviewing this for the Minneapolis Star Tribune USA Will post my review when I m finished writing it But I will say that I prefer Marilyn s translation.

  • I got this book through the first read contest. This is not the book to read if you are looking for a quick and easy summer read I found it very hard to get into because, for me, it was so hard to follow The book is about a woma who gradually has and trouble telling the difference between reality and her dreams This DEFINITELY shows up in the reading of the book As readers we end up having no idea what is really happening, what is being remembered, what is being dreamed points I was even left w [...]

  • This is a seriously weird magic realist novel But then if you set a book in Nazareth in 1948, and the main character is a heavily pregnant woman who keeps seeing another woman, dressed in blue giving her a baby, in her dreams, you are obviously and deliberately making a link with the most famous family ever to live in the town If you add to that mix a nun, who lives in Beirut, approaching saintliness, a wandering monk searching for the cave of Elijah and a husband with a penchant for quoting Ara [...]

  • Khoury s novels fascinate me partially because I know I cannot fully understand them As Though She Were Sleeping is ostensibly one woman s dream fantasy waking reality of the late 1940s in Beirut, Nazareth, and Jaffa It s the story of the British Israeli takeover of Jaffa and of Lebanese independence it s also the story of Mary, Joseph, Jesus, Abraham and Isaac and the ways in which Christian mythology overlaps with her life and that of her family It s brilliant and beautiful but terribly diffic [...]

  • Easily one of the best books i have read in years I can t recommend this enough The shifts between dream and reality, so that one informs the other, and the way that the language becomes consciousness for the main character is astounding I am baffled as to how this was done with such grace in translation Marilyn Booth deserves a world of praise for her translation work on this novel The only other book i have read that deals with these shifts so seamlessly is An Actress In The House by Joseph Mc [...]

  • ugh thank god i finished this book it was so annoying it talks about nothing keeps going back and forth between stories without adding anything up and at some parts i couldn t tell if they were the manifested dream or the actual story I m only giving two stars not one because at least i enjoyed some of the religious stories.
